Katarina Witt started skating at the age of five. Soon, her talents were evident and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. It was here that she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982, when she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic victory Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. The following year she was able to win another contest that was even more competitive. Even though she fell short in the free-skating contest, medal was given to her for her efforts on the compulsory figures and the short program. Witt became the first female multiple winner in figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. Although she didn't get a single medal she enchanted fans despite the fact that she finished seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame took place in 1995.
